One of the earliest devices used to help with someones mobility was actually used by King Philip II, a king in Spain during the 16th century.  This wheeled chair was very elaborated in its design because it had armrest and a spot to rest the legs.  In 1896 the US issued a patent for a wood and wicker designed wheelchair very much like the ones of today.

In 1932 an inventor designed the first folding wheelchair, but it was George Klein in association with the Canadian government, who designed the first motorized wheelchair in 1950.

Electric Mobility Scooters were first introduced in 1968 by Allan R. Thieme in Bridgeport, Michigan.  It was a front wheel design and was built to help a family member who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.  It was called "The Amigo" and it started an industry to help people with limited mobility issues to maintain their freedom and independence.  By the early part of the 1970's electric mobility scooters had become a very popular alternative to the motorized wheelchair.

Electric mobility scooters are designed to be used by people that can still walk, but find it difficult to do so.  The user has a limited range in mobility due to shortness of breath, fatigue, or pain.  Electric mobility scooters have made many advances just in the last few years.  They now offer fully rechargeable batteries, much more power, and some have a range of up to 25 miles on a single charge.

2 groups of electric mobility scooters that has become very popular are the
travel mobility scooters and ultralight electric mobility scooters that are available on the market today.  Both of these groups offer the user the ability to easily transport the electric mobility scooter with them in the trunk of their car.  These electric mobility scooters easily disasemble in to 4 or 5 smaller pieces each weighing about 30 lbs or less.  This, combined with lower prices, have made electric mobility scooters very popular.

Electric mobility scooters are available as both a
3 wheel mobility scooter and 4 wheel mobility scooter.  The 3 wheel mobility scooters offers more maneuverability and a tighter turning radius in smaller spaces like your home or apartment.  A 4 wheel electric mobility scooter is an excellent choice if the mobility scooter is more for use at the grocery store, shopping at the mall, or for outdoor activities with family and friends.  They offer more stability and safety, but are a little wider, requires a larger area for turning, and are slightly heavier when transporting.

If you find it a little more difficult to get around, or you become tired or out of breath quicker, look at electric mobility scooters today and see what you've been missing.
